Descriptive Modelling

With the Trusted Technique, Descriptive Modelling, you carefully narrate the intricacies of your thought process as you are working through an example. For example, you might say:

  • “When I see this, I think…”

  • “To help to remember to do this, I usually…”

  • “This bit can be especially difficult. To help me get it right, I like to…”

Why use this technique?

Descriptive Modelling makes it less likely that students will make common mistakes or get stuck when they attempt a similar task.

It also helps develop their metacognitive skills, supporting students to become more independent in their learning.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
