If you are starting a new topic, a useful activity to get students to engage with is a KWL Grid.

  • The ‘K’ stands for ‘what I already Know’.

  • The ‘W’ stands for ‘what I Want to learn’.

  • The ‘L’ stands for ‘what I have Learned’.

As well as being a very useful formative tool, KWL Grids can be a great way to help bring student voice into the curriculum.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
