Self-Quizzing

With the technique Self-Quizzing, students use resources such as their notes or Knowledge Organsiers to test themselves on previously taught content, using previously taught strategies.

For example:

  • Read – Cover – Write – Check – Correct

  • Flash cards (creating them and using them)

  • Creating test questions, such as fill-in-the-blanks

Why use this technique?

With learning in mind, we should be trying to create as many opportunities as possible for students to retrieve knowledge over spaced periods of time. Self-Quizzing is one way we can do that.

If we build Self-Quizzing into daily, weekly or monthly review, we create opportunities for students to practise using the technique, increasing the likelihood they will use it themselves, for example, as part of home study. In this way, the technique can help encourage students to take more ownership over their learning.

As they are practising in class, you can observe what they are doing and offer feedback about how to get the most from Self-Quizzing, and share examples of what students are doing well with others in the class.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
