Compare and Contrast

Compare and Contrast is a type of Spotlight Assessment Activity. It can be used to get students to think hard about the similarities and differences between two (or more) things, deepening understanding and making learning more secure.

For example:

  • What are the similarities and differences between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth?

  • What do hormones have in common with enzymes, and what makes them different?

  • What does the formula for the circumference of a circle have in common with that for the area of a circle, and what differences are there between them?

  • What are the similarities and differences between the paintings of Picasso and Rembrandt?

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
