Feedback Records

With the technique, Feedback Records, students make a written summary of the verbal feedback you have given them.

Why use this technique?

The usefulness of feedback should be evaluated in terms of the impact it has on helping students move from a current state to a goal state, not on the form it takes - written or verbal. Often, verbal feedback can be more useful to students than written. The reasons include because students often don’t:

  • Read the feedback you have written.

  • Understand the feedback you have written.

  • Know how to act on the feedback you have written.

Often, the low impact of the written feedback doesn’t warrant the time you spent writing it. Hence, verbal feedback can be better.

However, verbal feedback can be easily forgotten. This is one reason why students making a written record can be useful. Another reason is because, in making their own written record, students will have to think about the feedback. One further reason is that the accuracy of students’ Feedback Records can serve as a good indicator of how well they have understood what they were told.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
