Pause for Effect

With the technique, Pause for Effect, you deliberately stop talking after making a key point, using the silence to add emphasis.

Why use this technique?

The change in what is happening – teacher talk to silence – should help hold (or grab) students’ attention.

Notes and tips

After the short period of silence, you might repeat the point to help make it more memorable.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
