With the technique, Private Conversation, rather than reprimand a student in front of the class, you have a quiet word with them, which no-one else can hear. For example, you might move towards a student and quietly say, ‘I need you to give me your full attention, Charlie’.

Why use this technique?

Typically, students don’t like being told off. Sometimes when this happens, a student can have a negative reaction. Private Conversation helps avoid this being in full view of the class, which can distract other students. It also helps avoid the situation where a student continues to misbehave just to impress the audience of their peers.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
