Present a Problem

With the technique, Present a Problem, you introduce a topic or lesson by asking an overarching question that the lesson or topic will then focus on solving.

For example, if you are teaching a lesson about the effect of particle size on the rate of reactions, you could start this by asking: ‘Why is a flour mill less likely to explode if it includes extractor fans?’

Why use this technique?

Asking a question at the start of a lesson or topic can help generate interest and intrigue; answering it at the end of a lesson or topic can help bring about a sense of satisfaction: ‘We’ve solved it!’.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
