Rehearse In Your Head
With the technique, Rehearse In Your Head, periodically, you pause your presentation and say: ‘Rehearse that in your head’, indicating how long students will be given to do this.
For example, in a geography lesson in which the class is being taught key vocabulary relating to costal erosion, you might say, ‘You have 1 minute to rehearse these words in your head’.
Why use this technique?
Rather than students trying to memorise the words by reading them over and over, they are instead using working memory in a more active way. The task requires more cognitive effort, which should be better for their learning.
After the given time has passed, you might quiz the class on whatever you wanted them to rehearse.
Focused reflection
How well do you currently use this technique?
Is it a technique you will focus on developing?
If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
