Whole-class Feedback

With the technique, Whole-class Feedback, rather than interrupt students as they are practicing, you make mental or written notes about the key things you are seeing or hearing, feeding these back to the class as a whole. For example, after five minutes of practice, you might stop the class and say, ‘Okay, I’d like to summarise some of the things I’ve seen many of you doing really well and some of the common mistakes I am seeing’.

Why use this technique?

Whole-class Feedback can have at least two benefits to teaching and learning:

  1. It stops you having to repeat the same message over and over again.

  2. It helps you to monitor the performance of more students within a particular period, because you aren’t spending time giving individual feedback.

Focused reflection

  1. How well do you currently use this technique?

  2. Is it a technique you will focus on developing?

  3. If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
