Blended Criteria
With the technique, Blended Criteria, you use a combination of ‘I Can’ Statements, Key Features and/or Exemplars as success criteria, rather than just one type.
Why use this technique?
The more strategies we give students to think about success, the more likely they will be successful.
Example
For example, you might share an ‘I Can…’ Statement that reads, ‘I can describe the formation of crude oil’.
Along with this, you might share Key Features of what you are looking for in the description. For example: Your description should include the following points:
What it is formed from
How long ago it formed
Under what conditions it formed
After students have practised creating their own descriptions, you might then share Exemplars - great, good and poor - and ask them to critique their answer based on these.
Focused reflection
How well do you currently use this technique?
Is it a technique you will focus on developing?
If so, what are the key features you will focus on (things to do, and not do)?
